When your 'Droid crashes - recovery is SO easy!

The old days: when I had to replace a failed smart phone /PDA, or when the one I had failed (being immersed in water proved unfortunate), it took a full day to re-load, re-synch, re-install, re, re, re. Today I received a new Android phone and to move all of my applications, web, email, contacts, documents etc. took about half an hour. Most of the half hour I simply watched as the new device uploaded and applied all my stuff.

Wow, what a difference. More next time on some of the key techniques to this ease of transition - and bullet proof insurance against loosing anything, ever again, off your smartphone / pda.

Smart phone pictures to home and office computer

The Story
Walking along a beautiful path in the woods on a sunny afternoon in the Fall. Took a picture with my phone and wanted to be able to save it and share it from home and office computers.

Principles
Saving, sharing, updating and managing all the "stuff" can be very time consuming and at times, ineffective and frustrating.
1. Using web based tools, like Google Documents or Picasa, allows you to get to and use these files anywhere, on any machine, which has an internet connection.
2. Storing the files in Google Docs and Picasa means that unless all of N. America is vaporized in a nuclear holocaust, you will never again loose a file. BTW, if the 'vaporized' happens, you may not be all that focused on file recovery.
3. Set up automatic synchronization and integration for all your files, including pictures.

Steps
1. Download and install the free "Picasa" application
2. Create a folder within "My Pictures" on your hard drive for synchronization to the web; within Picasa, click the "Sync to Web" icon in top right corner. Examle:. In "My Pictures" on hard drive, create a folder "Phone Pics", open this folder in Picasa and click the 'Sync to Web' icon.
3. Syncronize your phone (Settings - Accounts and sync - Auto-sync.
4.Open the picture application on your Android phone (the Samsung Captivate app is called "Gallery") and move the pictures from your phone into "Phone Pics" folder
5. The next time you synchronize your phone, the pics will move into Picasa web and then be moved onto your hard drive.
* BTW All the picture folders you have sycronized through Picasa will be available on your phone, including any changes made to the pics on your hard drive.

Android smart phones - making it easy

Making, managing and moving Google docs from Android
The Story
In a recent meeting, I was keeping notes of our conversation in the Calendar event on my Samsung Captivate. During my next break, I copied the text from the Calendar event into a new Google doc on my Captivate smart phone. When I returned to the office, the new document was available in my Google docs which I updated and refined. In our next meeting, I will open and work with the Google doc on my phone.

The Principle
Record information one time in one place, share and synchronize as needed

The Steps
1. Keep short notes of the discussion in the Calendar event for the meeting
2. Copy to Google Docs, Word, email, etc. for later use, sharing, collaboration and updates
3. Synchronize it all through the web

Adding Shortcuts to Android
The Story
I wanted to provide a To Do (Task) list that I could access from my Android, that my admin assistant could also access concurrently, and allow oother project team members to view and/or update.
The Steps
  • Install the Google "Google Mobile" app from the Market Place
  • Open the app
  • Open Google docs using the icon (blue icon on left side, with label "Docs"
  • Log in if you need to using the gmail account which contains the docs you want to access
  • Open the spreadsheet
  • Add spreadsheet as a "Bookmark" (Lower left corner of Android for the "Menu" icon, and then open "More" on Right of screen, tap "Bookmark")
  • Close Google Docs
  • On an Android screen, press and hold finger down in a blank area until you get the "Add to home Screen" page
  • Choose "Shortcuts"
  • Choose "Bookmark"
  • Tap the bookmark you want to create shortcut to
It shows up on the Android screen, you're done!
